DEADLINE 2 FOR PLANNING APPROACHING!

FOR THE FULL LIST OF TASKS TO COMPLETE AND BLOG BY THE PLANNING DEADLINE, SEE YOUR BOOKLET.
You will need to be getting on with the storyboard on post-it notes early this week, and by the end of the week, you should have completed 2 ANIMATICS (link here to moodle - go to advanced portfolio section in A2 Media): one should have each shot timed correctly, so that the total animatic lasts as near to 5 mins as possible (not more than 10% either way), and the second should have a detailed and previously scripted commentary to explain the techniques used in detail, and explain what else the shot would do (your post-it note is only 1 FRAME of the total shot - it's a single frame in the editing process). See our additional handout information on this (also on moodle).

POST FOUR - RESEARCH ON 10 SHORT FILMS EACH!

Post Four

Research into Short films.

Deadline for this is Friday September 20th.

Read the guidance on Moodle (also some printed copies in GF5).

Conduct  Textual Analysis on 10 Short Films in total.

3 -5 of these can be of films that you analysed during the transition period.
The other 5 -7 need to be original short films that we did not study in class.

The whole point of this exercise is to apply all 5 media concepts - Genre, Representation, Audience, Narrative and Media Language, to each film.  Look at the guidance notes for help with this. However, you probably won't be able to apply all of the 5 concepts in the same amount of detail to each film, and your analysis will probably focus on a couple of the concepts more than all 5 equally.

So, think sensibly about what the examiners are looking for - it's about exploring the range of short films out there, about finding out what's possible, and it's about understanding how the 5 concepts can be applied to short films. Try to be inspired, not intimidated - and just do what you can! Less might be more, if the analysis is good!

Be imaginative in how you post this - it does not have to be written - you could present it as a video commentary for instance.  If you do opt for a written style, we expect lots of Screen grabs or Excerpts from the films that you analyse.

For each short film that you analyse, discuss how you would like to take any of the ideas forward into your own work.

Show the connection between films that you have watched and your own early plans.

POST THREE

Post Three

Define and summarise the 5 main concepts and the key theorists and terms associated with each.  This post will simply serve as a reminder for when you are writing later posts and it will also help you when it comes to question 1b of the exam. You can use our transition work, stored on moodle under Transition, 1a and 1b, (go to 1b). Also use the instructions for Sept work researching 10 short films (on moodle under Advanced Portfolio). Avoid going to google and slide share materials from other centres - they're often too vague, and may even be wrong!

POST ONE AND TWO - YOUR NEW A2 BLOG

Post one

Your group photo with an introduction.

Post Two

What problems did you have in the making of your foundation portfolio?

IF YOU COMPLETED THE WORK SET ON THIS IN JUNE USING THE GRID WE GAVE YOU, YOU CAN SIMPLY UPLOAD IT TO THE BLOG. THIS MAY ALSO INCLUDE OUR FEEDBACK OR ADVICE ON HOW TO IMPROVE THE EVALUATIVE COMMENTS. IF HANDWRITTEN, YOU COULD  SCAN IT  AND UPLOAD AS ABOVE.

What lessons have you learnt and how are you going to overcome these this time round?

If you are working in the same group, this can be a single post, however, if you are now in a group made up of several previous groups, you need to do this for each of the previous groups.

WELCOME TO THE NEW YEAR! IGNORE ALL POSTS BELOW THIS ONE!

Welcome back and welcome to your second year.

You will be starting work on your Advanced Portfolio immediately - researching and Planning for the short film.

Media studies achieved its best ever results last year - 62% of students got an A*, A or B grade.  There is no reason why you should not be aiming for something similar - certainly your AS grades make it a realistic possibility.

Choose your group carefully - are the people you work with reliable, can you meet up easily both inside and outside of college, do they offer different skill sets?

You need to tell us who you will be working with VERY SOON!
